WHAT’S IN THE CRATE?

It started with cake

When one of our co-founders saw his sister struggling with her home business of selling cakes to her customers, he presented the issue to his friends and they decided to explore the gap in the market.

The four partners realised that all home run businesses were struggling with the same set of problems and took the opportunity to build a service that would take this headache away, thereby allowing entrepreneurs to focus on the product development side of their businesses.

The partners struggled to find a name moving from Social Bakery to Social Market before finally deciding on Crate which is reflective of the traditional form of trading. Regardless of the goods, crates are used to transport products to and from the marketplace.

And so Crate was born on September 28, 2016 and months of finding a store space, beginning construction and pitching to potential clients ensued.

To keep people curious, Crate launched an Instagram account in February 2017 and posted photos of the Crate around town in landmark locations. Come opening day on May 19th 2017, everyone was eager to know #whatsinthecrate.

By the end of 2019, Crate’s brick and mortar store has seen over 170 brands and grown an organic following of 30k plus on Instagtam. We have become a staple name in the market of local and independent retail. And it doesn’t end here.

December 2019 saw the launch of Crate’s e-commerce site, an online hub of the experience we started building years ago when we saw the struggle involved in selling cake from home. In this next chapter, we’re reaching farther and wider than we have before, inviting more brands aboard our platform and delivering even more quality goods to customers worldwide.
